- Heartstopper boss explains why fan-favourite scene was cut
Not everything survived the translation to TV show.
Heartstopper released on Netflix last week to critical acclaim and a whole host of love from fans.
But in the transition from beloved graphic novel series to beloved TV show, some things had to be cut.
As part of a lengthy exclusive interview with Digital Spy, Alice Oseman – who created the graphic novels and developed the Netflix adaptation – admitted to having to chop a fan-favourite scene, despite knowing that it would probably disappoint some hardcore fans.

"I was thinking about this yesterday, actually," they said. "There is a scene in volume one where Nick and Charlie are play-fighting over a piece of homework.
"I frequently see tweets of people saying, 'I can't wait to see this in the show'. And I'm always sitting there like, 'Uh-oh. That's not in there'.
"I just felt like it didn't quite work narratively because we had to slightly slow down the romance of Nick and Charlie, just to make it work in a TV show. But, yeah, I feel like I'm going to get a few grumpy tweets about that not being there."

Oseman also discussed cutting a key character from the TV adaptation in the process of expanding the story to fit the needs of a multi-hour series.
"I'm kind of free to do whatever I want with this character," they said. "So, yeah, it's just about expanding the world and expanding the story."
A second season of Heartstopper hasn't been confirmed yet, but we've talked about the possibility of a renewal and where the story could potentially go next right here.
Heartstopper series 1 is available to watch on Netflix in its entirety right now.
